Google, Facebook Spent Record Amounts On D.C. Lobbying In Q1 2012

FacebookMore dollars were poured into the Beltway from technology companies in the first quarter of 2012. As shown through previous lobbying spends, each quarter, Facebook and Google continue to spend more and more on lobbying efforts in Washington D.C. In the most recent disclosure reports filed in the U.S. Senate?s lobbying database, both of the companies hit all time highs in terms of lobbying dollars. Google?s lobbying spend hit an all-time high again this quarter, with spending coming in at a whopping $5.03 million, tripling its spend from the same period a year ago. Last quarter, Google spent $3.76 million on lawmakers. Microsoft only spent $1.8 million on lobbying for the quarter. In 2011, Google spent $9.7 million on lobbying, and has already surpassed half of that spend in this past quarter alone.

Google, an underdog in Asia, lays plans for Taiwan data center

Taiwan gets Internet traffic easily from the United States. I sits at the ends of undersea cables that extend directly from North America before branching off to other parts of Asia.

Google dominates Internet search engines by such a wide margin in the United States that it?s a verb as well as the corporate name of its Silicon Valley-based creator.

But in China, Google vies with the local, government-approved search engine Baidu ? which means 100 degrees ? and lags South Korea?s local brand Naver. It competes head on against fellow American company Yahoo for searches in Taiwan, splitting traffic roughly 50-50. Yahoo has also held a historic grip on Japan.

So this week, the 14-year-old Google announced that by the end of next year, it would open a data center in Taiwan to improve search speeds and reliability around the region.

Google has already started building data centers in Hong Kong and Singapore. But the larger one in Taiwan comes with government incentives and will boast a specific geographic advantage. That is, Taiwan gets Net traffic easily from the United States, home to Google and the source of numerous Internet search results, as it sits at the ends of undersea cables that extend directly here from North America before branching off to other parts of Asia.

Google will spend a combined $700 million on the three centers, which generally house computers and storage systems that help speed connections and keep them secure.

?More new Internet users are coming online everyday here in Asia than anywhere else in the world,? Google?s Asia Pacific President Daniel Alegre said at a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at the coastal facility in Taiwan. ?That is why we are building data centers in Asia ??to ensure that our users here have the fastest, most reliable access possible to all of our services, so they can continue putting them to work.?

Google?s Taiwan data center will speed up searches particularly in China, which is just 160 kilometers (100 miles) away but has sought to censor Web searches. Baidu now controls about 75 percent of the searches in China.

?That?s a key, to serve China,? says Marvin Ma, software and services analyst with the market research firm IDC in Taipei. ?China will notice a clear improvement. And this way Google can avoid the censorship problem.?

In 2010, Google shut down its locally based Chinese search engine after a dispute with the communist government over censorship and cyber-attacks, a row that prompted harsh words from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Google won?t give market shares for Asia or estimate the overall number of users in the region. In South Korea, Naver still handles about two-thirds of the Internet searches, analysts estimate. But two years ago, Google and Yahoo signed a search-engine technology deal that has muffled the rivalry in Japan.

Google is also catching up in Taiwan as the ever popular Yahoo retrenches, with reports of layoffs in the pipeline, says Jamie Lin, founding partner with Taipei-based tech investor appWorks Ventures. ?If they don?t make any mistakes, Google is going to be the dominant player in a couple of years,? he says.

Janitor given life sentence in death of NJ priest

MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) ? A former church janitor was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole for the 2009 stabbing death of a beloved New Jersey priest who had fired him.

Jose Feliciano declined to comment before he was sentenced for the death of Rev. Edward Hinds at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Chatham.

Both men were well-known members of the church community, and the slaying shook the parish and well-to-do suburb of Chatham, a northern New Jersey community about 20 miles west of Manhattan.

Prosecutors said Hinds fired Feliciano after discovering the janitor had an outstanding arrest warrant in Philadelphia from the 1980s for sexually touching a child. They said Feliciano stabbed Hinds more than 30 times as the 61-year-old priest, in his clerical robes, was brewing a cup of coffee in the rectory kitchen.

Hinds' body was found when he didn't show up for Mass.

Feliciano, of Easton, Pa., testified for eight days during his trial in state Superior Court in Morristown. He admitted killing the priest but claimed he had acted in a fit of rage over sexual blackmail. He testified Hinds had demanded sex in exchange for keeping quiet about the warrant.

Several witnesses testified that Feliciano never mentioned the alleged sexual overtures, and Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi insisted Friday that investigators found no evidence to support the claims.

"Our family, our community is never going to be whole again because of Ed's murder," Daniel Silas Miller, whose mother was Hinds' cousin, said outside the courtroom minutes after the sentencing. "Thank God, everyone saw through these lies, and Ed's reputation is restored."

Several members of Hinds' parish spoke of the devastating impact the slaying had on their tiny suburban community and the horror of hearing such accusations made against their priest.

Michelle Ballotta Lowe, a parish member for more than 40 years, considered Hinds a confidant and close friend. She said counselors were brought in for children too terrified to sleep with the lights off following the murder, and for parents reeling from revelations about Feliciano's past.

She described the trust the community had had for a man who once "patted our children on the heads as he gave them milk and cookies," and noted that he was a fellow member of the church along with his wife and children.

"The world can be a cruel place. I know people learn that in life, but I do deeply resent the manner in which this lesson was imposed on us," Lowe said.

Feliciano had worked at the parish since 1991. Prosecutors said he used aliases and fake identification over the years to hide his past. In December, a jury found Feliciano guilty of murder, felony murder, two counts of robbery and two weapons counts.

Bianchi became emotional, his voice breaking at times, as he argued for Superior Court Judge Thomas Manahan to impose the maximum sentence. Outside court, he said he had been moved by how Hinds lived his life and saddened by his senseless death.

"This man's life was dedicated, 24-7 to helping people," Bianchi said. "He died literally trying to protect God's children, and he paid for it with his life."

Zimmerman sorry for shooting Trayvon; bail set at $150,000

Trayvon Martin's parents saw their son's killer face-to-face for the first time in court on Friday, where George Zimmerman took the stand to say he was "sorry for the loss of your son." A judge set bail at $150,000. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

By Becky Bratu, msnbc.com

A Florida judge set bail Friday at $150,000 for the release of George Zimmerman, who apologized on the stand to Trayvon Martin?s parents for the loss of their child.

?I wanted to say I am sorry for the loss of your son,? Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman, who was wearing a suit and had chains that wrapped around his waist and connected to handcuffs, said that at the time of the shooting he did not know how old Martin was or whether he was armed. He also said he previously had asked police and his attorneys to tell Martin?s family that he was sorry.

His comments were the most robust to date about the incident, which set off a wave of protests and an examination of race relations in the country. Zimmerman, whose father is white and mother is Hispanic,?is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Martin, who?was black.

Following the hearing, Natalie Jackson, an attorney for the Martin family, said Zimmerman's apology was "insulting to the family."

"This is the most unmeaningful apology we've ever seen in our entire lives," Jackson said, according to an Orlando Sentinel reporter.

Judge Kenneth R. Lester, Jr. said Zimmerman would not be released immediately and that he would be monitored electronically via GPS. The terms of the bond include a curfew and?no alcohol or guns. Also,?Zimmerman must be in touch with authorities every three days. The judge wouldn?t rule on whether Zimmerman would be allowed to leave the state.

Zimmerman?s attorney had asked for a $15,000 bond, citing his client?s family?s modest financial holdings. The prosecution said Zimmerman should not be granted a bond, but if he is, it should be for $1 million.

Speaking publicly for the first time since her husband shot the unarmed teenager in February, Zimmerman?s wife of almost five years, Shellie Nicole Zimmerman, said her husband poses no danger to the community.

?Absolutely he is not a violent person,? Shellie Zimmerman said. She spoke to the court by phone because she said she has received hate mail and is concerned for her safety. She did not report the mail to the police, she admitted upon cross-examination by Prosecutor Bernie De La Rionda.

Zimmerman, who is a nursing student four weeks shy of graduation, said she would ?absolutely? ensure that her husband would be present in court for his trial if he were to be released on bail. She added that her husband has been living in hiding since the shooting.

NBC's chief legal correspondent Savannah Guthrie hypothesizes Zimmerman's attorneys may be speaking to a larger audience, including potential jurors who could be watching, in arranging for George Zimmerman to speak in court on Friday.

She was among a handful of witnesses testifying at the hearing, including Zimmerman?s mother and father and an investigator for the state attorney?s office, who was one of the signatories of the probable-cause affidavit that accused Zimmerman of ?profiling? Martin.

Dale Gilbreath, the investigator, said he couldn't remember who came up with the use of the word "profiling" in the document.

Gilbreath added that Zimmerman had two lacerations on his head, which could have been caused by impact with cement.

Zimmerman claims self-defense in the shooting. ABC News says it has?obtained an exclusive photo of the back of Zimmerman's head, which appears bloody and may help substantiate his claims.

?Zimmerman?s father, Robert, echoed his daughter-in-law?s testimony, saying his son is ?absolutely not violent.?

?I?ve never known him to be violent at all unless he was provoked, and then he would turn the other cheek,? Robert told the court. ?He?s been honest his whole life.?

The defendant?s father, a former court magistrate, added his son has always been interested in criminal justice.

George Zimmerman, who has been charged with second degree murder in the death of Trayvon Martin, takes the stand at his own bond hearing at the Seminole County Courthouse in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman tells Martin's parents he's "sorry for the loss" of their son.

Zimmerman?s mother?s testimony painted the portrait of a man concerned with the community he lived in, who was ?protective? of people and children. Gladys Zimmerman testified that the Sanford mayor had recognized her son for his efforts in mobilizing the community in the case of a homeless man who had been beaten. She also added that her son mentored two African-American children in Orlando and visited them often despite her objection that they lived in a ?dangerous? area.

On Thursday night, Zimmerman reached out to ask to speak to Martin?s parents, but they rejected that request, another attorney for the family, Benjamin Crump, told NBC Miami.

The family did not want to talk with Zimmerman?because they felt?he had never publicly apologized for what happened to their son and they thought it was inappropriate to do so at the 11th hour before his bond hearing, according to Crump.

NBC Miami and The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

Sony patent application aims to put names to faceless MMO players, organize real-world meetups

Image

Dear MMO players, Sony's getting worried about your indoor tan. Really. The electronics giant's even gone so far as to file a patent application to get you out of your parent's basement and into the great outdoors. Alright, so the move isn't altogether altruistic -- it's more of a means to a promotional end -- but from the looks of this USPTO doc, the company's outlined a method to create a program that would encourage gamers to head into the daylight for organized events where everyone knows your online name. Of course, there'd be rewards and other incentives (trophies, perhaps?) on hand to coax you out of that Snuggie and help foster a sense of community. Not to worry, though, Bunim / Murray haven't got their MTV-friendly reality cams targeted on this concept, yet.

Backed With $1.5M, CircleUp Aims To Be The AngelList For Consumer And Retail Startups

circleupThe funding environment for technology-focused startups these days is getting to be a bit ridiculous, so some tech industry folks may need to use their imaginations for a second to understand this concept. There are a lot of companies out there in the consumer and retail space -- with real products, real employees, and, yes, real revenues -- who have a very hard time finding the investors needed to take them to the next level of growth. The truth is, it's even more difficult than you probably think to start the next Clif Bar, Burt's Bees, or American Apparel. That's where CircleUp aims to help. CircleUp is a San Francisco-based startup that has built an online platform to allow consumer product companies to raise money from accredited investors. Much like AngelList does for tech startups and the angel investment community, CircleUp allows both retail companies and the people who would potentially like to invest in them to evaluate each other and communicate in a private social networking setting.

Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE listed as 'coming soon' on Bell Canada's site

Just a couple of days ago, Canadian carrier WIND quietly outed its soon-to-be Nokia Lumia 710, and now it's Bell's turn to follow suit by teasing an upcoming device of its own. Unlike WIND, however, Bell isn't flaunting a Mango-flavored handset, but instead a Gingerbread-loaded Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE. As you may have guessed by the "LTE" stuffed in its relatively long dub, this Sammy slab will be able to surf through the Mobility network's Long Term Evolution waves. Sadly, the product page isn't showing us just how much cash you'll have to unleash, or how "soon" we can expect it to hit shelves around the True North. No worries, though, since Bell does have a signup page waiting for you to kindly place your name on it.

Social Media Management: Knowing the Right Social Media Management Company

April 17th, 2012 by admin

If you look around nowadays, you?ll discover so many social media management companies. But who?s genuine, and who?s just a poser? It can be difficult to tell with every other person and their mother declaring to be a social media professional nowadays. Search on the internet for popularity signs and testimonials / situation research. Look who they follow and evaluate their internet existence. Are they legitimate or just a bogus? Don?t go for the most affordable guy on the block either. Usually when it comes to social media management, you get what you pay for usually. You cannot assume someone that?s never developed a company with social media to be able to show you how to do the same.

All about CBSE Board

CBSE Board or the Central Board of Secondary Education is the examination board that allowed for the school level education in India to a different level. Its history can be traced back to the foundation of U.P board of High School and Intermediate education was first set up in the year 1921. Rajputana, Central India and Gwalior were its only jurisdiction. The Government of India, in 1929 that time the British government suggested a joint board in all over India which was termed as, ?Board of High School and Intermediate Education? having Ajmer, Marwar, Central India and Gwalior under its jurisdiction. It resulted in a rapid growth in the secondary education in all over India as the quality improved and there was a standard that was to be maintained all over India. In 1952 finally the present name was given and a CBSE syllabus was fixed all over India for maintaining standard.

There are some CBSE sample papers which will allow having a close look and getting an idea about the pattern of the studies.
* CBSE board was established with the basic requirement of setting up a common educational system all over India and also to help the education of the pupils whose parents are with the central Government jobs. Their transfers created huge problems for their kids to cope up and that was the prime reason behind forming this board.
* CBSE syllabus will give you a good glance of the type of studies they pursue and the way in which they follow the modern education system. They have now started following the MCQ type questions which are more modern and perfect for the competitive sectors as well. This will give an added advantage to the students in this board. They have introduced more interactive style of learning and that will remain in the heart of the students. The more important work that was done in the syllabus is they use simple language and give the students the opportunity to ask questions.
* CBSE sample papers will provide you the exact ideas which are needed to understand the pattern of questions that are likely to come and the type of studies.

CBSE board is one of the modern boards in India imparting education. CBSE syllabus is also modern and kept up to date with passing time which you will be able to understand by the CBSE sample papers.

'Dancing With The Stars' Latin Night Belongs To William Levy

Latin soap star compared to James Bond after Argentine tango Monday.
By Kelley L. Carter

Cheryl Burke and William Levy on "Dancing With the Stars"
Photo: ABC

With Monday as Latin night on ABC's reality hit show "Dancing With the Stars," it should have been Latin soap star William Levy's week, right? It was.

As the actor and his pro partner Cheryl Burke took on the Argentine tango, Levy played every bit the part of a Latin lover with dance skills, wearing an unbuttoned tuxedo shirt. The judges thought he hit all the right marks — and with a twisted ankle to boot. Carrie Ann Inaba said the actor looked like a "Latin-dancing James Bond." 29/30

Here's how everyone else fared:

Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas
Tying Levy at the top was opera singer Jenkins, who also danced the Argentine tango. The judges thought she was perfection and gave her one point shy of a perfect score for her efforts. Head judge Len Goodman said, "This, for me, was like a rose: It had beauty ... but underneath was sharp." 29/30

Maria Menounos and Derek Hough
The TV journalist salsa'd her way to a great performance. The judges told her their dance was passionate, hot and had just the right amount of spice. The pair's routine ended with a hot kiss on the lips. "I don't think you needed the kiss! The salsa is all about the illusion of passion. Don't go at it right in front of us," Inaba said. 27/30

Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd
The NFL hot shot danced the Argentine tango, and the judges praised him for his control and execution. Judge Bruno Tonioli said he did a "fantastic job." 27/30

Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower
The Disney star pulled off a routine that wasn't exactly G-rated. But he kept it clean. Goodman told him he moved like "a young guy with his first car." Inaba joked that he was "sexy in a Disney way." 26/30

Jaleel White and Kym Johnson
The childhood TV star danced the samba and bared a pretty impressive six-pack in the process. The judges were impressed by his moves, with Goodman telling him, "Your bum was going like you were chewing toffee." 24/30

Gladys Knight and Tristan MacManus
The soul legend shook her stuff to the samba, and even though the judges were lukewarm on it, they still praised her. Tonioli told her she was magic, while Goodman said her moves were "simple, but effective." 22/30

Melissa Gilbert and Maks Chmerkovskiy
Gilbert did the salsa — a tough feat considering she was injured last week. In her rehearsal segments, she danced around in a neck brace and hard hat. The judges liked her stick-to-itiveness, and Inaba told her it was wonderful to see her gain confidence. Tonioli said she lacked an element of control. "I saw excellent parts and parts that weren't so good," Goodman said. 21/30

Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff
The pop singer rounded out the bottom. He said in his rehearsal segment that he hoped to continue relying on votes from his fans to keep him in the game. He danced the samba, and the judges weren't too impressed with his moves. "I don't know whether to laugh or cry," Tonioli said before adding, "I actually enjoyed it." The other judges said it was missing key elements. 19/30

Maria Menounos & Derek Hough?s DWTS Kiss (Video)

DWTS is getting hot hot hot thanks to a steamy kiss between Maria Menounos & Derek Hough on last night?s show. Does the intimate moment mean anything or was it all for the judges?   While performing a very sexy Samba on Dancing With The Stars Maria and Derek took things to the next level with a kiss that has some people calling the dancing duo sellouts and some wondering if there isn?t something more going on between these two. The judges didn?t seem to care why there was a kiss in the routine or what it means, they gave Hough and Menounos a fantastic score of 27. I tell you what if the lip lock was just a stunt to impress then well it clearly worked on the judges but did it work on the voting fans? I guess we will find out tonight won?t we? I watched the show and I have to say there very well could be something else going on with these two besides their desire to take home the mirror ball trophy. I mean they basically had a little make out session on the dance floor and I don?t care what kind of stunt [...]

»Brienne of Tarth has arrived! Season two has already introduced many new key players to the Seven Kingdoms, but Brienne is easily one of the biggest of the newbies, both literally and figuratively. Gwendoline Christie brings the character to life perfectly as one of "King" Renly's most loyal servants. Her introduction via combat against Ser Loras is one of the highlights of "A Clash of Kings," and it was adapted fantastically for the small screen. Great work all around.

»Speaking of great work, one of my favorite Tyrion chapters in the entire series (wherein he tests Pycelle, Littlefinger and Varys' loyalties through their ability to keep a secret) premiered in this week's episode, and it was fantastic. That one-two-three fast one hinges entirely on Tyrion's thought process in the books, and even without his direct point of view, his mastery over the game of thrones shines through phenomenally in the show's rendition of the sequence thanks to Peter Dinklage and editing wizardry. Again, incredible job.

»My love for Theon Greyjoy knows no bounds. That's probably a hard concept to wrap your head around as you see the Stark turncoat's actions play out throughout the season, but his arc is perhaps my very favorite in George R.R. Martin's epic tale. Alfie Allen and the show's writers are doing a remarkable job with Theon and Pyke, and his torment over choosing a side — either the Starks or his biological family — comes through tremendously. Keep your eye on this one... it gets a whole lot darker before you'll see any light.

The Bad
»Would you look at that: not a single bad scene in the entire episode! I suppose it would have been nice to see Dany again, or gotten more progression with Dragonstone, but those are minor nitpicks that will be corrected next week. Of course, even if there was no bad, there was plenty of ugly. And on that note...

The Ugly
»Tyrion is one of few characters on the show you're pretty much always rooting for, but even he hit a low this week in how he handled arresting Pycelle. The maester deserved his punishment, but lopping off the poor old man's beard? That's just cruel!

»And yes, naturally, there was another child death. That's "Game of Thrones" for you. If the slaughter of the bastards and the sacrifice of Craster's son didn't do it for you, Lommy's death certainly should have sold you on the dangers of Westeros. Sad to see him go, but let's be honest — better him than Arya or Gendry!

»Finally, let's pour one out for Yoren. I hated losing him in the books, and it was even worse to see him go on the show. But if you have to go, go down swinging like Yoren, I suppose. If nothing else, his death gives Arya another reason to hate the Lannisters. That way lies many, many badass things.

Howard Stern Tries to Have Phone Sex With Octomom

When Howard Stern had the creator of dial-a-star (dot) com on his show this week, the conversation quickly turned to the roster of peeps that can be called directly for a fee.

Yes, there is a site offering this. And Nadya "Octomom" Suleman is one of the people.

Howard, naturally, decided to dial Octo up and talk dirty to her. Think NSFW dirty talk people. But, sadly (or luckily), Nadya wasn't up for phone sex. Listen:

Stern shouldn't be too surprised, really. For an individual who birthed 14 kids, she shows a striking lack of interest in all things vagina. It's uncanny.

This is a woman who would rather go on welfare and get death threats than do one porn scene for a million dollars. She's just not that into the sex.

Dana White: Mark Hunt title shot ?ain?t gonna happen?

Despite a groundswell of support from fans, UFC president Dana White said Mark Hunt is not a candidate to replace Alistair Overeem in the title bout with Junior dos Santos at UFC 146 if Overeem can't get a license.

"They can keep rallying," White said on Saturday following UFC on FUEL TV 2 at Stockholm's Ericsson Globe Arena. "That ain't going to happen. Listen, Mark Hunt is going to have to fight one of the top guys. You don't just jump right into the title shot."

White mentioned Hunt needs to win against Stefan Struve, his current match-up at UFC 146, plus get past one of the heavyweight division's best to be considered for a title shot. Hunt is currently riding a three-fight win streak, but had lost six fights before that.

After Overeem's chances of getting a license for the May 26 event were called into question by the Nevada Athletic Commission, Hunt's fans took to Twitter and Facebook to lobby White for a spot for the slugger. However, their arguments that Hunt would provide an exciting fight against dos Santos did not sway White.

Now, the UFC has to wait for Overeem to have a hearing with the NAC. White said Overeem deserves to go through due process.

"Everybody gets due process," White said. "Alistair Overeem will have his due process with the Nevada State Athletic Commission. We'll see what happens and we'll go from there. When it all goes down, somebody else will speak about this. Not me."

And much to his fans' dismay, it won't be Hunt fighting dos Santos.
